Man separated from wife dies at 96

A 96-year-old Rossland man died Thursday less than two weeks after his
wife's death at a distant care home touched off a major health-care
controversy.

Al Albo died at the same Trail hospital where his 91-year-old wife, Fanny,
had been a patient until she was transferred Feb. 17 to a residential care
home in Grand Forks more than 90 minutes away. She and her husband of
nearly 70 years didn't get a chance to kiss goodbye.

The frail woman died two days later.

Health Minister George Abbott, who earlier apologized to the Albos' sons
for the treatment of their mother, called them again Thursday to express
his condolences for the death of their father. [...]

A provincial government report released Wednesday concluded that the
health-care system failed Fanny Albo, and that she should have been placed
in a palliative care bed in Trail, rather than transferred outside the
community. [...]

Murray Ramsden, the authority's chief executive officer, told reporters
prior to the meeting that staff clearly made the wrong decision to
transfer Fanny Albo. "This was a very unfortunate situation that did occur
and it shouldn't have happened," he said.

B.C. child protection under microscope

VICTORIA (CP) - The brutal beating death of a 19-month-old girl in
September 2002 by a relative with a criminal record for violence is
expected to put B.C.'s child protection system under a microscope at a
coroner's inquest that starts Monday.

Sherry Charlie died 22 days after government agencies placed the toddler
and her older brother in an uncle's home in Port Alberni, a Vancouver
Island logging and fishing city of about 18,000 people, located about 200
kilometres northwest of Victoria.

Ryan Dexter George, 32, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 2004 and was
sentenced to 10 years in prison.

George, on probation for spousal abuse and with previous convictions for
arson and assault, originally told police Charlie died when her brother
pushed her down the stairs. He later admitted he beat and kicked her to
death because she wouldn't quit crying.
[...]

The original government review sparked at least six other reviews of the
handling of Charlie's case, including an independent investigation by Ted
Hughes, a former judge and B.C. conflict-of-interest commissioner.

Premier Gordon Campbell said last November he must take the blame for what
he called the systemic breakdown of the government's plan to review child
deaths, including Charlie's.

Solicitor General John Les said budget cuts and government-wide
incompetence resulted in the failure to properly review the deaths of 713
children.

He said the files were shipped to a Victoria warehouse where they sat
unattended for three years.

so NDP govt never made/make mistakes is what you're saying? I wish you'd
proclaimed that before then I could have thought about voting for Jack
Layton at least at the federal level. Maybe I could have my driveway paved
with gold by now.

This type of unfortunate event has happened before under socialist as well
as non socialist govts. I feel sad what apparently happened to the Albos but
on the other hand I also find it disgusting that people like you try to
strip away all facts to achieve a particular picture; one that portrays the
healthcare system as uncaring and malicious towards those in its care. BTW I
don't and haven't ever worked inthe healthcare system.

The sad fact is shit happens and unless people are either very lucky or have
strong advocates for their welfare it happens to them.
You are putting forth opinions without any reference to the facts
surrounding the case. From the mention of the palative care unit it might be
assumed that Mrs Alba was terminal and perhaps not in contact with the
world. We have no idea of what Mr. Albo's condition was.
I'm not condoning what happened but on the other hand trying to manufacture
a political issue out of what may have been human stupidity is just a bit
over the top.

How many hundreds of children died in care under NDP governments, Karen?

How many times, under the NDP, did the Ministry change its name so as to
obscure the fact they were involved in killing kids in care?

Hay baby, (goo goo) you better hear this then, it might explain the violence
issues for you..No wonder children are dying.....

The Ministry of Equality Propaganda (National Socialists Sillys (NDP)
Suppressing the Information on Violence, a good look at why violence issues
are gender bias in Canada on men and children - MP3
A basic tenet of feminist theory is its view of intimate violence as a
manifestation of our culture's "patriarchal" structure, with its attendant
differential status, power, and control, which are reflected in individuals'
attitudes and behaviors.
Shouldn't all violence be look at, whether it's on men, women or children.
In today's society the Government(s) of Canada keep on with the same old
propaganda for one gender only. Isn't it time the media wakes up to the real
facts.
